She Saw Red

11×14: Limited Edition Print

Every surfer knows the strange math of a hurricane swell. The storm is a thousand miles away, spinning in its own private silence, and somehow the ocean is already delivering its mail. Lines march in from the horizon, heavy and unhurried. The sky goes the color of a bruise at sunset. The air gets very still, and you start to feel that the water is holding a grudge.

She Saw Red lives in that stillness. Bands of crimson, magenta, and burnt orange stacked like swell lines, cut with black-violet where the water goes deep and mean. Cream and turquoise whitewater tears across the surface, thick and scraped, the way a wave detonates on reef. Underneath, the paint cracks and crazes like dried salt on skin.

It is the eye of the storm and the storm at once, which is the trick of every good hurricane. Beauty and warning wearing the same coat. Calm at the center, chaos at the edges, and a color that means both go and stop.

I never told her what she saw. That part is yours.
