Sandbar

11×14: Limited Edition Print

There's a moment right after a set passes through when the ocean exhales. The wave has broken, the whitewater is dissolving, and the water is left to sort out what just happened. Sand gets picked up and set down somewhere new. Channels open. Channels close. Nobody signs off on any of it.

Sandbar lives in that moment. Turquoise pours through a dark field of deep navy and near-black like a rip finding its way out through the reef, slow and milky and a little smug about it. The shallows glow in olive, gold, and peach, the color of sunlit sand under six inches of water. The far side of the frame goes to mottled green and teal, thick with texture, like the bottom just before it drops away.

It reads like something seen from above, a coastline from a low pass in a small plane, or the view from the lineup after you've been out too long and the light has gone soft. I like that it holds both scales at once. It could be a whole island's edge or a puddle of paint that decided to behave like the sea.

The banks shift with every swell. A good sandbar is only ever a temporary arrangement, and that's the whole beauty of it. Get out there while it's working.
