Hurricane

11×14: Limited Edition Print

Kawaihae is not a place that usually raises its voice. It's a working harbor on the dry side, all hot sun, cane trucks in the memory, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget the island has weather. Then a big storm comes up out of the south and the whole coast changes its mind.

The mountain lets go. Red dirt sheets off the hillsides and pours down the gulches, and the harbor mouth turns the color of a rusted truck door. The lineup goes with it. Brown-red water shoves through the set waves, foam turns pink where it meets the runoff, and the wind comes off the land howling like it has somewhere better to be. You can taste the iron.

That's the painting. Burgundy and blood red laid down in hard diagonals, like swell lines getting hammered sideways by gale. Whitewater and pink foam thrown across them in thick, scraped strokes. Gold streaks cutting through like a sliver of sunlight the storm forgot to switch off, and stubborn flecks of turquoise, the last honest bit of ocean holding its ground.

I painted it loud on purpose. Some days the island whispers. Some days it hands you the whole truth in one red breath, and the only sensible move is to stand at the edge of the harbor and watch.

The dry side gets a storm maybe once in a long while. Make it count.
