Channel Islands - Sand Dollar
Channel Islands - Sand Dollar
Exploring the central coast of California it is hard to ignore the desolate stretch along Big Sur. Something about this area calls to artists, creatives, thinkers and explorers. Those looking to get lost and found at the same time. No cell reception, big water, cold water…. A place where once again you can feel the smallness of life and an appreciation for the moments.
Sand Dollar is a welcoming bay along this coast. With big rolling swells and deep water, it takes a little more foam under your feet to get going and a sharper rail to hold a line once you hit the inside sections. This Channel Island surfboard was shaped in in the late seventies by the legendary Al Merrick. The stinger shape tells a story from a time in surfing where design was in radical transformation and all rules were being abandoned. More foam at the front and a sharpness near the tail helped a surfer to catch a wave as easily as they had on longboards, but also delivering a snappy maneuverability in the pocket.
The central coast of California is a different place to surf. Colder and more open, the color shifts and becomes darker. Kelp dominates the lineups with greens, browns, yellows dancing beneath your feet and daring to snap your fins. I love the hues of green in the water in that part fo the world. Distinctly different from southern California and definitively more intense than the vibrant blues of Hawaii.
A striking piece of surf art / wall art, this elegant surf art is created from a 6’6” Stinger shaped surfboard that is lovingly, carefully and creatively dipped into paint, then gently pressed to canvas in order to create a one of a kind impression. A modern interpretation of the ancient art form Gyotaku. This print would be the perfect gift for a surfer, or for a beach themed room.
The surfboard used is a custom surfboard, shaped by Channel Islands Surfboards in Santa Barbara California. I rescued this board from a trip to the dumpster in Kailua Kona Hawaii. After 35 years of gathering dust and unfortunate souls could not see the beauty and history they held.
Each piece of art is hand made, one of a kind and truly original.
