Everybody wants the wave. Nobody wants the wait. But the wait is where it lives….. the whole tribe strung out along the swell lines, bobbing, jockeying, praying to a horizon that owes them nothing. From up here it looks like patience. From down there it's a knife fight in slow motion.
This one is painted from the bird's view, the angle you only get when you stop being one of the bodies in the water and start reading the whole organism at once. The lineup becomes pattern. The pattern becomes weather. Those white breaks are not decoration, they are the moment the ocean decides, the exact second the negotiation ends and somebody either goes or doesn't. Look close and the little flecks of red and yellow are still down there, individual, hopeful, out of position. That's all of us. Specks with opinions, floating on a thing that has none.
The teal is not a color so much as a temperature. Cold enough to keep you honest, warm enough to keep you out there longer than you should. Built up in layers and dragged with a blade so the ridges catch the light the way a real swell does at midday, flat and blinding, hiding everything underneath.
Hang it somewhere you pass every day. It will not let you forget that the good stuff is on the far side of the waiting, and the waiting is the point.
