Seen from above, Kūkio Bay turns into pure pattern. Bands of deep blue and teal run diagonally across the canvas, the way the trades comb the surface of the water on a clear Kekaha afternoon. Ridges of thick white paint catch the light like whitecaps, scraped and dragged with a knife so the surface feels as restless as the sea. Flecks of gold, coral, and violet flicker underneath, the way sun and shadow scatter across shallow reef.

The wind here is a gentle, steady trade, the same one that has been pushing across these waters for as long as people have been reading them. It echoes a thousand years of voyaging, and an ancient relationship with the ocean at Kaʻūpūlehu that was built on patience, observation, and respect. This piece is a quiet nod to that lineage: the water as a living surface, always moving, always telling you something if you stay long enough to listen.

Heavily textured and layered, the painting changes with the light and your position in the room. Up close it is all scrape and splatter. From across the room, the bay comes into focus.
